Plainsong by kent haruf summary6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But life in Holt is going to go right on, for the sense of continuity in time is as strong as the sense of location in place. The story of Benediction, like its title, suggests closure. They are three different stories, but they have cumulative power. Occasionally he risks and once or twice falls into sentimentality: but looking at the Holt novels as a whole, his courage and achievement in exploring ordinary forms of love – the enduring frustration, the long cost of loyalty, the comfort of daily affection – are unsurpassed by anything I know in contemporary fiction.īenediction, shortlisted for Monday's Folio prize, is best read as the third of three novels linked by some recurrence of characters, but chiefly by the extraordinary presence of the town and its countryside, built up detail by detail in each book. Haruf handles human relationships with fierce, reticent delicacy, exploring rage, fidelity, pity, honour, timidity, the sense of obligation he deals with complex, barely stated moral issues, pushing perhaps towards an unspoken mysticism. The violence is common in novels at present, the compassion less so. The passions of the people of Holt, many of them loners by nature, subject to the repressive conventionality of small-town America and all the restraints of poverty, ignorance, and relentless hard work, break through sometimes in violence, and sometimes in acts of outreaching compassion. ![]() Consuelo by george sand6/9/2023 ![]() Items in order will be sent as soon as they arrive in the warehouse. Great historical composers and other personages make delightful and surprising appearances all throughout this emotionally intense and exalted novel, often verging on the realm of the supernatural, and considered by many to be George Sand's masterpiece. What will the pure-hearted zingarella choose? At the same time romantic choices are laid before her in the shape of a beautiful but frivolous comrade of childhood, a loyal friend and fellow adventurer, a mysterious holy madman who may also be a saint and her one true love, and finally, a king.Īnd yet, every artist must choose the nature of their personal fulfillment, and Consuelo's life path appears to be ever-dissonant with ecstasy and sorrow, duty and joie de vivre, love and sacrifice. ![]() ![]() ![]() CONSUELO: A Romance of Venice (1842-1843) by George Sand is a glorious story of true love, a paean to music and the creative power of art, and a personal crossroads of choices.Ĭonsuelo, a plain young woman with a divine operatic voice and a heart of sterling integrity, rises from her lowly zingarella (gypsy) beginnings to become a prima donna in Venice and in several courts of Europe, bewitching all with her uncompromising artistic excellence and her profound interpretation of music. ![]() Blood price by tanya huff6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() With many of the typical expectations and gratifications that are the baggage of horror. Blood Price has a few other strengths, like Huff's strong sense of place (the book is set in Toronto), but it is all in the benefit of a narrative that is clearly horror. ![]() Huff introduces some excellent characters, who are all much better served by the immediate sequel Blood Trail. The book has some gory sections and a good deal of occultic matter, like demon summoning, vampires feeding, and so on. ![]() Why does this matter? It doesn't, except that I'm no longer much of a reader of horror novels, and would have appreciated less garbled messages before starting to read Blood Price. I find this bit of pigeonholing highly misleading, and would have preferred to see this book thrown under that other (admittedly creaky) catch-phrase, horror. But in the little DAW box on the spine, we see a clear label: FANTASY. The title, along with the spooky illustration, might give the impression that this is a horror novel. Blood Price, Tanya Huff, DAW, 1991, 272 pp.įor those who might judge a book by its cover, Blood Price gives mixed signals. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A calliope's shrill siren song beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained.
